I first met Shai Shvalb when he joined my English course which was focused on improving English communication skills for tour guides in Israel. Shai graduated the course successfully and demonstrated an English level that approaches mother-tongue level. In parallel to the course, and in order to further improve his English skills, Shai continued to improve his English by taking an additional private English course in which he excelled at.
Shai is currently writing a one-of-a-kind Hebrew/English English/Hebrew dictionary and thesaurus especially for tour guides and those interested in the geography, history, archaeology etc. of Israel.

It is with great pleasure that I write this recommendation for Shai Shvalb’s tour guide services. As someone who does not typically choose to discover places with a professional guide I was pleasantly surprised by Shai’s ability to draw and keep my attention throughout the trip with his knowledge, humour and passion.
As an intimate group of three we discovered the old city of Jerusalem – from the City of King David, the Western Wall and through the markets – history became alive. What I appreciated about the trip was that we began our journey for the day looking above the city from Mt. Of Olives to understand the geography of place and how it influenced all that we were to discover later that day.
To complete the trip we rested for a wonderful cup of coffee at the Austrian Hospice garden café and rooftop, followed by a quick walk over to an old family owned and operated tahini factory. Shopping for gifts was also a treat and with Shai’s knowledge of both Hebrew and Arabic - I was able to get fantastic finds for family and friends.
I would recommend Shai’s services to small and large groups alike. Those interested in history of place or simply enjoy the beauty that so many places in Israel have to offer.

It’s been almost two weeks since we got home, but it’s been incredibly busy. The problem with vacations, no matter how wonderful, is that it takes double the vacation time to get back into a routine.
In any event, that is just a long way of explaining why I had not reached out to you earlier. I want to thank you again for a wonderful trip to Herodium. Your professionalism made the tour enjoyable. I especially want to thank you for the follow up in sending the scanned copies of the VIP room frescoes to us. It just means that at some point we will have to return. We will, of course, let you know about a redo, when the time comes. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip, your clear explanations and pleasant demeanor during our day with you.

שי, אני כותבת לך מכתב זה כדי להביע את הערכתי והערכת משפחתי על יום ירושלים שקיבלנו בהדרכתך, מילים לא יוכלו להביע את הכרת התודה, על היחס האישי וסבלנות למשפחה שלי שהגיע לביקור מקנדה, ובקשו לתור בארץ אך ביקשו ממני להימנע מכל הקשור לדת ופוליטיקה וטיולים מאורגנים. אתה הסכמת לערוך לנו סיור אישי בירושלים וזו הייתה חוויה מרשימה מהרגע שהגענו בשעות הבוקר לעמוד על הר הצופים ולצפות על כל המתחם הגיאוגרפי של העיר והקרבה למדבר יהודה, התצפיות על אתרים שנראה בהמשך, התצפית מהר הזיתים אל הכנסיות והרובע היהודי, מתחם הר הבית, הר ציון, חומות ירושלים, הסקירה הכללית המלווה בתצפיות הייתה החוויה העוצמתית מכל הבחינות,,, למרות היום החם, הטיול היה הנאה מאתגרת מארוחת הבוקר בעיר דוד וההליכה ברחובות ובאתרים המלווה בסקירה היסטורית וארכיאולוגית שהחזירה אותנו אל לפני ימי בית ראשון כשדויד כובש את העיר היבוסית, והקמת הבית הראשון על הר המוריה, הסיור ברובע היהודי, המסע מהר ציון לשער יפו, חומות ירושלים, נחל קידרון, האתרים בעיר העתיקה הקשורים לדתות אחרות והמורשת ההיסטורית המרתקת שקיבלנו ממך לאורך כל הטיול באתרים מהתקופות השונות, שידעת להמחיש אותם בכל אותם פרוספקטים ודפי מידע שהכנת לנו, זה היה מסע מהמם לעברה המפואר של העיר שכלל מופעים אור קוליים וביקור במוזיאון, ושהסתיים בשווקים הססגוניים, 'אין עלייך' ,,,גם כשהלכנו לאיבוד מעוצמת החוויה אתה ידעת בנחת ובחיוך לתת לנו להרגיש שהכל בסדר, כשהתלהבנו בשוק , אתה דאגת כמו אבא טוב שלא נשלם מעבר למה שצריך, ובחינניות האין קץ שלך הפגנת את היכולת שלך בשפה הערבית ובמשא ומתן מפולפל וחייכני שאפשר לנו לקנות יותר ממה שחשבנו, ולהנות ממקח וממכר שלא קיים בקנדה.
המיומנות והכישרון אשר הפגנתה עשו את הטיול הרגלי "לעלות להר הבית" ליום קסום שחיבר אותנו לעבר והשורשים של אדמת הארץ לאורך זמנים ותרבויות שהשפיעו ועיצבו את האתמול והיום.
לא חסכת במאמץ, וההדרכה הייתה ברמה גבוה בשילוב של הומור, שאפילו החיות שיתפו פעולה כשהזכרת את התרנגול , קיבלנו מיד החזר של תרנגול קורא בקול וכולנו פרצנו בצחוק ,,, זו רק דוגמא ליום הספיריצ'ואלי והכריזמטי שחווינו אתך בשפע ההסברים והחיוכים וההפתעות הקטנות שהענקת לנו, כמו בית הכנת הטחינה,,, ועוד. שי אני אסירת תודה לך על היום הקסום שחיבר אותנו עם העבר ונתן תמריץ של איכות ושייכות לאומית.
שי , יש בך מכל המידות והתכונות של סבלנות ויחס אישי ותודה על היותך אדם שעליו אפשר לסמוך, ותודה על כל העצות הטובות, והיכולת להביא אותנו למקומות שלבד לא היינו מגיעים, ושעות הכייף שבילינו וחווינו את ירושלים ביחד. אהבנו את ההדרכה שלך. והבעת התודה לא יכולה להקיף את מלוא הערכה שלנו אלייך.

Our time in Tel Aviv was great but the 3 days we spent experiencing the North and staying at the Galilee with you as our private guide were the highlight of our trip.
Having never met or talked with you prior to the trip gave us some obvious apprehension. You came highly recommended but given the fact that our entire trip was developed via e mail was a unique way to generate a itinerary . Yet, your ability to quickly distill our desires, personalities, passions and expectations were spot on. Your ability to incorporate our personal commitments into the trip, especially related to the hospital visit, was seamless and very much appreciated.
We learned a tremendous amount from you as your knowledge of Israel not only from a historical and political perspective but also from a social and gastronomical slant was right in line with what we wanted. The trip to the Golan Winery was perfect and served as a learning experience for all of us. Your restaurant suggestions were ideal and we loved having you join us in the experience.
