  • In ancient Greece, homosexuality was often seen as a natural part of life. Relationships between older men and younger boys, known as pederasty, were common and even encouraged as a form of mentorship. These relationships were not just about physical attraction but also about intellectual and moral development. The famous philosopher Plato wrote about the virtues of such relationships in his works.

In ancient Rome, the view on homosexuality was somewhat different. While same-sex relationships were not uncommon, they were often seen through the lens of power dynamics. Roman men were expected to be the dominant partner in any sexual relationship, whether with women or men. The passive role in a homosexual relationship was often stigmatized, and those who took on this role could be looked down upon.

During the Renaissance, attitudes towards homosexuality began to shift. The period was marked by a revival of interest in classical antiquity, including its more permissive attitudes towards same-sex relationships. However, the influence of the Catholic Church meant that homosexuality was often condemned and punished. Despite this, many artists and intellectuals of the time, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, are believed to have had homosexual relationships.

These historical perspectives show that attitudes towards homosexuality have varied greatly over time and across cultures. They also highlight the ways in which power, social norms, and cultural values can shape our understanding of sexuality.
